THE CHALLENGE
IPv4-Only legacy client apps can't cross IPv6 networks & VPN tunnels
VPN tunnel traffic between client computers and the gateway server always uses IPv6. When a remote user launches a legacy application that only supports IPv4, those packets simply cannot enter the IPv6 tunnel. The application fails silently. The user calls IT. Productivity stops. Server-side solutions like NAT64 and DNS64 handle the other direction — translating IPv6 traffic back to IPv4 once it reaches the corporate network. But they do nothing for IPv4-only client applications trying to connect outbound.
This is the gap APP46 fills.

What APP46 delivers
A lightweight agent that solves IPv4-to-IPv6 compatibility at the client — no application modifications, no source code changes, no end-user training.
Client-side translation
Translates IPv4 application traffic to IPv6 at the Windows client — no server-side changes needed. Supports multiple simultaneous connections over TCP.
Intelligent auto-sensing
Automatically detects when the laptop is on the corporate LAN or connected via an alternative VPN. Translation activates only when the IPv6 tunnel is in use.
Centralized management
APP46 Configuration Server provides a GUI for managing all client settings from one place. Clients check in automatically and pull updated configurations.
Enterprise deployment
Supports silent installation and Active Directory GPO deployment. Includes GPO templates for configuring APP46 settings across client computers at scale.
HOW IT WORKS
Stateless IPv4-to-IPv6 translation
APP46 uses stateless translation compliant with RFC 7915 and RFC 6052 — it doesn't maintain session state, just maps addresses.
Configure applications
Define each IPv4-only client application with its executable path, TCP ports, and corresponding server FQDN in the APP46 Configuration Server.
Agent intercepts traffic
The APP46 client agent listens on a local IPv4 address and intercepts outbound traffic from configured applications.
Translate and tunnel
IPv4 packets are translated to IPv6 using a 1:1 address mapping and sent through the VPN tunnel to the corporate server.
Return path translated back
IPv6 responses from the server are translated back to IPv4 and delivered to the client application — completely transparent to the end user.
Smart network detection
Checks internal resources via configurable methods

ARCHITECTURE
APP46 components
A client/server architecture with centralized management and enterprise-grade deployment options.
APP46 client agent
Runs as a Windows service on each VPN client. Intercepts IPv4 traffic from configured applications and performs stateless IPv4-to-IPv6 translation based on 1:1 address mapping.
APP46 configuration server
Server-side GUI for centralized management. Add applications, change server names, and update configurations — clients automatically pick up changes on their next check-in.
GPO templates & deployment
Administrative templates (ADMX/ADML) for Active Directory Group Policy. Supports silent MSI installation. Available in x64 and x86 client packages; server is x64 only.
With IVO's help, we were able to use their APP46 solution to make products work seamlessly with the DAC. Without their help our project would have been a lot more difficult and some of the challenges may have had to be solved another way.
